Paul and Joanna Drinkhall won the Mixed Doubles Table Tennis Gold Medal for England at the Commonwealth Games on 2 August 2014 – the only Table Tennis Gold medal that didn’t go to the team from Singapore.
What you may not be aware of, is that Paul was raised and educated in Loftus, and his family are still based in the area. Loftus Town Mayor, Cllr Barry Hunt, said “I am sure that all the members of the Town Council, and in fact the whole of Loftus, will join me in congratulating Paul and Joanna on this magnificent achievement.
The town is buzzing with this good news. We have all been proud of Paul for many years – he was the Loftus Junior Citizen in 2006 – but this is his greatest success to date. Seeing this gold medal achievement with his wife Joanna, and the silver medal for the England men’s team, should be an inspiration to the young people of East Cleveland.
I hope to be able to congratulate Paul in person, but I understand he will soon be preparing for the European Championships in Lisbon. In the meantime, I offer my good wishes to Paul, to Joanna and to all of their team-mates for continued success”.
